Dangerous Designs!
Secret Files Opened...
It isn't only Dangerous Dan that can sniff out secrets! Agent
Dennis (Codename - Double Oh,
Oh-oh!) has managed to infiltrate Beano HQ security
to uncover the secrets of starting a new story for The Beano...
Dangerous Dan's adventures started life as a brief description,
known as a pitch, written by one of the Beano writers
(Codename - The Man With The Golden
Pun). This document, marked "For Your
Eyes Only", was given to the Editor
(Codename: Em... oops, nope,
Ed) for approval.
After Ed gave the pitch the thumbs up, scripts were written to
see how the character of Dangerous Dan and the situations would
develop. It may be easy to write one or two scripts, but would the
character be strong enough to run all year round (no,
not like Billy Whizz) in weekly Beano
stories?
But it's not until genius illustrator Nigel Parkinson
(Codename - Draw Another Day) got
involved that Dan really came to life. From the brief outline,
Nigel created a number of looks for Dan, and you can see them
here...
With the writer and the Ed chosing their top Dangerous Dan
designs, it was action stations! The writer and
artist's mission... to work together to produce the first batch of
finished comic strips starring this new creation, now marked
"For Beano Readers Eyes Only!"
