Fact File

Started:
1938
Finished:
1993

'Pansy Potter - The Strong Man's Daughter' made her first appearance in Issue 21 of The Beano in December 1938. And Pansy certainly inherited her dad's strength, as steel and concrete could bend and crumble in her iron grip - in many ways she was a schoolgirl equivalent to Dandy strongman 'Desperate Dan', as both were sometimes unaware of their own strength until disaster struck.

Pansy 1

This great power would come in handy during the Second World War, when Pansy set to clobbering the Nazis with gusto.  But when the series returned for a second run, there weren't just Pansy's powers on display, there were magical powers too. The story had been retitled 'Pansy Potter in Wonderland' and followed her adventures in a strange land, populated by fairy tale figures, which she discovered down an old wishing well. Pansy remained in Wonderland until 1953, whereupon she emerged from the well and back into her usual domestic setting.

Following her disappearance from The Beano in 1958, Pansy returned as one of the stars of 'The Sparky' comic between 1965 and 1975, before making a final return to The Beano in 1989.

Pansy 4

The original title for the strip had been 'Biff Bang Bella', and the early strips were drawn by Hugh McNeill. Basil Blackaller took over in 1940, with Sam Fair following him in 1944. By the time Pansy found herself in Wonderland, James Clark was the artist, with Charles Grigg and Gordon Bell sharing duties on the final series of the fifties. On Pansy's return in 1989, Barry Glennard provided the artwork.
