According to the dictionary, the word aesthetic is an adjective which is do “with beauty or the appreciation of beauty” and is a fancy word which art lovers like to throw around in conversations.
Like many words, they can be the recycled and reused – very eco-friendly – to mean something slightly different than before. This is called semantic drift. But we’re not here for some sort of word lesson.
The meaning behind the word aesthetic hasn’t changed completely, but can be used nowadays to mean something that captures a sound, a look, or how someone wishes to appear on social media apps like Instagram.
There’s lots of different types of aesthetics and we’ve narrowed them down to four distinct types for the purpose of this blam personality quiz.
After answering a series of questions, our special computer will chew up the data, give them a crunch or two, then present you with an answer. Your aesthetic could be described as normie, goth, vapourwave or surf.
Before you rush off to the mirror and try to find out for yourself, hold your horses. Relax. Let technology do the hard work for you. After all, the answer might not be crystal clear at first glance. It might be a feeling that comes through in how you present yourself to the world.
Normies, for instance are people who love to dress, well normal. It could be by accident. After all, most people are normies, whether they realise it or not. It just means you look good and feel comfortable wearing regular clothes, and have the fashion sense of one of the Friends cast: comfy jeans, t-shirt, trainers. A sensible coat if it’s a little cold.
A goth aesthetic is a little more mysterious. Think black t-shirts, black trousers or skirts, black shoes. Your clothes are basically darker than a shadow sandwich and you enjoy films like Edward Scissorhands.
Vapourwave, meanwhile, is all about pastel colours and old school internet graphics. You might even wear sunglasses with a bright frame and your look just says, ‘I’m chilled’.
Surf, if you hadn’t guessed already, is a look that says that every day is a summer holiday. You like wearing baggy shirts, summer shorts and leave a trail of sand everywhere you go.
