5 Storytelling Top Tips for World Book Day

Need to some guidance on writing the best story ever? Here's a handful of handy hints!

1. Write about what you know!

You'll find it much easier to write a story if you draw on your own personal experience or interests. That way, you'll be able to describe scenes with confidence.

2. Plan your story!

A great story always has a good start, middle and end. Map out how the story will unfold before you start and you'll discover the different elements of the story will slot into place, like a wordy jigsaw puzzle.

3. Think about your characters carefully!

Before you even pick up a pen or turn your computer on, think about all the different people in your story. What motivates them? What are their interests? What do they look like? Once you've done that, you'll be able to write some fantastic dialogue which will give you story those all important details to keep the reader hooked. Don't spend too long describing what colour shoelaces they have, mind.

4. Don't be afraid to add some twists!

Any story when you can guess what happens next is a bit boring. Keep your readers on their toes by throwing them off the scent with some surprises. A tiger told us to write this bit. See? Bet you weren't expecting that!

5. Make sure your ending is memorable!

A great story has a fantastic ending. Does it make sense? Does it tie in with the start of the book? Is a king covered in custard? These are the types of things your favourite author will give a lot of thought to. And most importantly, have fun!
