Worried About Returning to School? Beano’s Got Your Back

It's normal to feel nervous. Check these tips for a chilled-out start to school!

Going back to school is going to be a little... different this year. Not because of the robot janitor or the new wrestling lessons with Mr Guff-Savage. Nope, it's that annoying virus again: Covid 19. You've heard of it, right?

Now, it's completely normal to be worried about going back to school. But there are a few things you can do to make yourself feel a little bit calmer and a little bit more confident.

And if you remember these tips you can leave the worry where it belongs - in Mr Guff-Savage's sweaty leggings!

1. Talk about it

Have regular chats about how you feel with your Mum, Dad, Auntie, Uncle, Granny, pet rabbit, the goblin that lives in the shed - anyone who you trust and feel close to. Just talking about problems can make a big difference, and who knows - your family might even have some good advice! IMPORTANT: Do not rely on rabbits or goblins for help. Goblins don't exist and rabbits give terrible advice.

2. Remember That EVERYONE is Worried

It's not just you that feels like this - the whole world does! There's nothing wrong with feeling scared, and worrying doesn't make you a wimp, a wuss or a scaredy cat - and certainly not a chicken-livered cream-puff milksop. Whatever one of those is.

3. Remember to have fun!

Plan some fun things to do in the evenings and at the weekend. Hopefully you're having fun at school anyway, but even if you're not - remember that school is only a part of your week. You've still got all the usual things to look forward to - birthdays, Christmas, National Squeaky Armpit Day - and even if you have to spend them in a bubble you can still have fun!

4. Talk about the Good AND Bad things

We might be in a pandemic, but that doesn't mean everything in the whole world is rubbish. Make time to talk to your family about the good things that happened at school as well as the scary things. What was the funniest thing that happened today? Did you learn anything interesting? Does Mr Guff-Savage REALLY have a human skull in his desk? Find out how your family feel as well, because who knows - maybe you can help them out too!

5. Take a Deep Breath

If you're really worried or upset, there are some handy tricks to make yourself feel better. First, take a long, slow breath in through your nose. Do this as slowly as you can. Then hold your breath in for 1... 2... 3 seconds. Don't rush. Then breathe out again through your nose - nice and slow like before. Keep doing this and you'll soon start to feel much better. You can also find a quiet spot and try and clear your head of all the bad thoughts - you can find out more about how to do this in this article. Basically don't breathe like this walrus. Slow down, walrus!

6. It's all going to be OK

The world's smartest people are super busy right now trying to fix this Covid thing. And us humans are a pretty clever bunch - even if we doesn't always look it. So it might take a while, but one day you'll wake up and Coronavirus won't be a big problem any more - and we can go back to worrying about normal things. Like how to skive out of these awful new wrestling lessons!
