15 Heavenly Le Sserafim Facts!
Calling all FEARNOTs! It’s time for the ultimate fact file on your favourite group, Le Sserafim!
Le Sserafim are one of the BIGGEST girl groups in the world – like seriously, HUGE! They’ve only been on the scene since 2022, but they’ve already one some amazing awards and broken some incredible barriers! 1. They’re first girl group to debut under BTS’ label HYBE!
HYBE is one of the biggest music labels in South Korea, with bands like BTS, NewJeans and Seventeen signed up to them. Le Sserafim were the first group to debut under their newly-acquired sub-label Source Music!
2. The group has five members
The band consists of SAKURA, Huh Yunjin, Kazuha, Eunchae, and leader Kim Chaewon. The group originally had six in the lineup, but original member Kim Garam left the group shortly after their debut.
3. Kim Chaewon is the daughter of an actress
Kim Chaewon is the leader of the group, and she’s also been in showbiz for a long time (more on that later)! Performing talent runs in the family – her mother is a theatre actress, and her cousin is a classical guitarist. She didn’t always have her eye on the K-pop industry, though – as a kid, she wanted to be a flight attendant!
4. Their name is an anagram of I’m Fearless
Fearlessness is a huge part of Le Sserafim’s brand, and their name reflects it! The group want to spread the messages of self-confidence and strong will to their fans.
5. It’s also a reference to seraphim
Seraphim are six-winged angels that appear in Christian, Jewish and Islamic theology. We usually think of angels as pretty and sweet, but the seraphim of ancient religious texts are actually quite frightening – the word derives from an ancient word meaning “burning.” Le Sserafim do use a lot of angel imagery in their work, though it’s the pretty kind of angels we’re more used to!
6. Sakura was in AKB48
Before joining Le Sserafim Sakura Miyawaki was part of two different J-pop groups AKB48, and HKT48. She had two centre positions in AKB48, for the singles “Kimi Wa Melody” and “No Way Man”. She’s also an ambassador for skincare brand Primera, and had her own cosmetics line between 2021 and 2022!
7. Their fans are called FEARNOT
If you’re a stan but don’t know your official group name yet, here it is! It references in the group’s theme of bravery and independence. It’s also a homonym, which is when two words are the same but have different meanings, like bat (for hitting) and bat (the flying mammal). In Korean the word FEARNOT is a homonym for the word “blooming”. The band and the fans will all bloom towards fearlessness together!
8. Yunjin grew up in the States
Huh Yunjin was born in Seoul, but her family moved to Albany, New York when she was only eight months old! Her English name is Jennifer Huh, but she prefers to go by Jen. She returned to South Korea aged 16, where she started pursuing her dream of being a K-pop star! She’s also done some opera training, and released a few solo singles!
9. They’re VERY successful!
Le Sserafim were a smash hit almost immediately! They won their first award a staggering eight days after their debut in 2022, on Korean music show The Show. They won numerous other awards in their first year, including several Asia Artist Awards. Their first full-length album “Unforgiven” was also a smash hit, selling over a million copies on its first day, which is the highest EVER debut by a female group! Le Sserafim are only behind Seventeen, BTS, TXT and Stray Kids for highest first-day sales – they even beat BLACKPINK!
10. Kazuha was a ballerina
Ever wondered why Kazuha Nakamura is such a flawless dancer? She’s a professionally trained ballerina! Kazuha has won domestic and international competitions for her dancing, and studied ballet when she lived in Amsterdam between 2020 and 2021.
11. Some members appeared on a reality show
Sakura, Chaewon and Yunjin all appeared on reality TV show Produce 48! The aim of the show was to pick members of a new girl group, and while Sakura and Chaewon made it through, Yunjin was eliminated, finishing in 26th place.
12. Two members were in another band
Sakura and Chaewon were in the group IZ*ONE together, before Le Sserafim was formed! The group had 12 members and was active from 2018 to 2021. Chaewon and Sakura were also the first two members of Le Sserafim to be launched to the public.
13. Eunchae is the baby of the bunch
In K-pop, the youngest member of the group is called maknae, and Hong Eunchae fits the role for Le Sserafim. She made her debut in the K-pop scene at the age of only 15! Eunchae says she was a tomboy as a kid, and she loved playing football with the boys and being loud and funny!
14. Kim Min Ju almost joined
Fellow IZ*ONE member Kim Min Ju was considered for Le Sserafim’s line-up, but she wasn’t selected in the end. The rumour is that she declined the opportunity to focus on her acting career.
15. They have their own colours and gems!
K-pop stars are usually sorted into different categories, and Le Sserafim are no exception! Each member has an official colour and gem: Chaewon is silver and diamond; Sakura is pink and pink diamond; Yunjin is green and emerald; Kazuha is blue and sapphire; and Eunchae is red and ruby. Whatever your Le Sserafim bias, you can wear their colour to show your support!
