K-pop fans are going crazy for NewJeans! Even though they’re still pretty new on the scene, this girl group have already made SERIOUS waves all over the world! 1. There are five of them!
NewJeans feature a five-girl line-up – Minji, Danielle, Heuin, Haerin, and Hanni! They were picked after more than 50,000 girls auditioned for the group.
2. They debuted in 2022
The group were set to debut in 2021, but the COVID-19 pandemic set them back a little. They hit the scene the following year instead and were an instant success. They released their first single “Attention” as a total surprise, with little promotion beforehand. The risk paid off, and the single made it to number 1!
3. Their name has a double meaning!
“NewJeans” is meant to allude to the fact that jeans are a timeless fashion item that anyone can wear. Their music is meant to be timeless and appealing to a lot of people. But it’s also a play on the phrase “new genes” – as in, they’re a new generation of K-pop!
4. Their fans are called “bunnies”!
All K-pop groups need a good nickname for their loyal fans, and if you’re a NewJeans stan, you’re officially a Bunny! It comes from their fondness for bunny aesthetics, which is all over their debut EP (also called NewJeans)!
5. Minji was an exchange student in Canada!
Kim Min-ji, the rapper of the group, learned English while studying abroad in Canada as a child! She’s a Taurus, her nickname is “Teddy bear”, and though the group doesn’t have an official leader, she often assumes the role – she is the queen of the clean-up!
6. They’ve won a lot of awards!
NewJeans have already been called “one of the most recognized and most influential groups in pop” by American music magazine Billboard – and they’ve got the awards to back it up! Time magazine named them Next Generation Leaders (a pretty amazing feat for such a new band!), and they’ve scooped numerous wins at major award ceremonies. These include the Billboard Music Awards, the MTV Music Video Awards, and the Asia Artist Awards – a total of 108 nominations and 60 wins!
7. They’ve done some amazing collabs
NewJeans might be just as famous for their numerous promotions and collaborations as their music! Some of the brands they’ve worked with include Coca-Cola, Apple, McDonald’s, Hyundai, and numerous smaller Korean brands. They also worked with the British Museum to make an audio guide for the museum’s Korean exhibit!
8. Danielle is an Aussie!
Danielle June Marsh was born in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia! Her dad is Australian and her mum is South Korean, and the family moved to South Korea when Danielle was four. She’s not just a great singer – she’s also a global ambassador for Burberry and Yves Saint Laurent, and voiced Ariel in the Korean dub of the 2019 live-action version of The Little Mermaid!
9. They promote traditional Korean culture
The band have worked with the Korea Craft and Design Foundation to promote hanji. This is traditional handmade paper made from paper mulberry (a Korean tree). It’s been made in Korea since ancient times, and is a part of traditional Korean culture.
10. Hyein was a child model!
Lee Hye-in started her showbiz career at a very young age, walking runways at the age of eleven! She’s the youngest member of the NewJeans, too, and she was the youngest girl to appear on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar South Korea. Her favourite colours are lavender and white, and one of her nicknames is “faucet”, because she’s super emotional!
11. They outsold Barbie!
You might remember that in the summer of 2023, EVERYONE was talking about Barbie. The soundtrack for Barbie was everywhere, with hits by Lizzo, Billie Eilish, Charli XCX and Dua Lipa – but it was no match for NewJeans! The group’s second EP Get Up outsold Barbie the Album – a seriously impressive feat!
12. They have a TV show!
Not content with making music history, the group also have their own travel reality show, NewJeans Code in Busan. It was created to promote tourism in the South Korean city of Busan (which is on the southern coast, and is the second most-populous city in South Korea). It definitely worked – some of the places the group visited were swarmed with fans after the show aired! If you find yourself in Busan, the tourism board has made two guides specially for NewJeans fans!
13. Haerin loves cats and frogs!
Kang Hae-rin’s nickname is “Frog”, because she wears a lot of green, owns lots of frog dolls and toys, and uses the frog emoji to represent herself. Her preferred nickname though is “Cat”, because she thinks she looks a little like a cat! Fun fact: the very first concert she ever went to was BTS!
14. They’re VERY charitable!
NewJeans aren’t just making people happy with music – they’re supporting so many good causes! The group and their record label donate an annual sum to Snail of Love, a charity that supports people with hearing loss. They’ve also donated money to earthquake relief, and to support education in South Korea!
15. Hanni is Vietnamese!
Hanni’s full name is Phạm Ngọc Hân, and she was born in Australia to Vietnamese parents! She can speak English, Korean and Vietnamese, and when she was a kid she appeared in Australia’s children’s version of The Voice! She says she is a Hufflepuff, but would prefer to be in Slytherin because it’s cooler!
